Things You Should Know When Using Insurance to Pay for Therapy:

1. You must be diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis in order for your therapy to be covered by insurance. Marriage, parenting, child/adolescent, and relationship counseling are not covered by health insurance unless at least one of the insured clients is given a diagnosis. Not all people who seek individual, couple, or family counseling necessarily have a mental health diagnosis.  Often, individuals are experiencing normal reactions to abnormal, stressful, or challenging life situations - and need support and guidance with that process.

2. If you choose to use your insurance benefits, your mental health diagnosis and other submitted information become part of your medical records forever in a national database called the Medical Information Bureau (MIB). Information from therapy sessions can impact your ability to obtain life or health insurance, or even future employment. Similar to credit reporting bureaus, data from medical records is entered into the MIB, along with the insurance provider’s computer records. In spite of federal laws, private medical information can be broken into and has even been bought and sold freely by companies who profit from the information.
3. If you choose to use your insurance benefits, the therapist is required to submit your diagnosis along with his/her progress notes about your therapy. The therapist may have to discuss your therapy progress with an insurance case manager or provide documentation in order to authorize additional sessions.
